And thenโ€ฆ BAM! They reply with phrases youโ€™ve never heard in your Dutch lessons. It sounds like a completely different language. I get it, Itโ€™s incredibly frustrating!

In your Dutch classes, you typically learn formal Dutch (ABN), focusing on official, written language. But reality is a bit trickier.

Apart from the various dialects like Brabants, Zeeuws, Rotterdams, Gronings, Limburgs, Amsterdams etc. and even an official second language (Fries!), thereโ€™s a huge range of spoken phrases and expressions that can be hard to understand. And letโ€™s not forget those words that can have 2, 3, or even 4 totally different meanings!

Donโ€™t let this discourage you.

It can be confusing, but hearing these phrases AND seeing them written down can really help you understand them. Over time, you’ll feel more confident with Dutch, and who knowsโ€ฆ maybe you’ll surprise your colleagues soon by using one of these new expressions!

To get you started, Iโ€™ve put together a document with ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฌ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐——๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, along with English explanations. It will help you finally understand what’s being said around you, and itโ€™s a fun way to get one step closer to full integration.

* “De knoop doorhakken” literally translates to “to cut through the knot.”

Figuratively, it means to make a decisive decision or resolve a difficult situation after a period of indecision. This expression conveys the idea of taking action to move forward, especially when faced with uncertainty.
