When you arrive fresh in the Netherlands, you need time to settle in. After a while, you discover that embracing these differences is crucial for your success.
Here are six personal tips I like to give to my students that might be helpful for you:
- Understand the Dutch Meeting Culture
Dutch people like efficient meetings and direct communication. Make sure you’re well-prepared, get to the point quickly, and be clear when sharing your ideas. It’s all about making your point without unnecessary detours. - Be active in group discussion
In the Netherlands, your opinion is genuinely valued. Even if you’re new to the team or the country, don’t hesitate to participate in discussions and share your ideas. You don’t always have to be right; it’s about contributing to the process. - Respect the work-life balance
Dutch people place great importance on their free time. Long working hours and overtime aren’t the norm here. Make sure to respect the boundaries between work and personal life, and avoid sending work-related emails after hours unless absolutely necessary. - Show initiative and take responsibility
In Dutch work culture, proactivity is important. You’re expected to take responsibility for your work and actively contribute to solutions. If you encounter a problem, try to come up with a solution first before asking for help. - Be patient
It takes time to fully adjust to a new culture and work environment. Be patient with yourself and others. Integration and building strong relationships don’t happen overnight. Take the time to understand your colleagues and the work culture. - Learn the Dutch language
While many people in the Netherlands speak English, learning Dutch can really help you integrate better. It shows you’re making an effort, and it opens doors for deeper communication in the workplace and beyond.
